Anand C. Patel

Vice President, Clinical Development & Exploration Leader, Pioneering Medicines

Anand joined Pioneering Medicines in 2021 as Vice President of Clinical Development and Exploration Leader. In this role he leads explorations of new medicine opportunities with Flagship platform companies and external strategic partners to advance Pioneering Medicines’ portfolio of therapeutics programs. He also oversees the strategic clinical development of Pioneering Medicines’ portfolio -- from conceiving medicine concepts to developing assets through human proof-of-concept.

Anand is an accomplished industry executive with significant large-pharma drug development, bioinformatics, scientific research, and clinical experience. Prior to joining Flagship, Anand was at EMD Serono for five years, where he most recently served as Senior Medical Director, Neurology & Immunology. Among other responsibilities, he led clinical development and supported global regulatory activities for evobrutinib, an investigational, oral, highly selective Bruton's Tyrosine Kinase inhibitor across a variety of indications. He was also the Business Process Owner for the Protocol Development process. In this role oversaw the company’s Business Process Management 2.0 initiative and was involved in revisions to internal governance processes. Prior to EMD Serono, he was at Pfizer, where he was Precision Medicine and Clinical Lead in its Pharma Therapeutics area and advanced the clinical development and regulatory strategy for the firm’s Cystic Fibrosis programs, as well as its autoimmunity and medical dermatology assets.

Prior to this, he gained broad clinical, research and bioinformatics experience at Washington University where he was most recently Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine. During his 11-year tenure at the University, he served many roles including pediatric pulmonologist, airway epithelial biologist, immunobiologist, and bioinformatician—roles that significantly informed his desire to bring new, efficacious therapies to patients through precision medicine and clinical development.

Anand was awarded his M.D. from Rush Medical College of Rush University Medical Center and completed his pediatrics residency at SUNY Stony Brook and his training in Pediatric Pulmonology at the Washington University School of Medicine/St. Louis Children’s Hospital. He earned his M.S. in Bioinformatics from The Johns Hopkins University and his B.S. in Biology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
